Importing your personal effects tax-free

To claim Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief in Cyprus and avoid paying additional customs duties, you must be permanently relocating to Cyprus. Your household goods must have been owned and used by you for at least 6 months before your move, and your shipment must arrive within 12 months of establishing residency in Cyprus.

If you don’t meet these conditions, your shipment could face standard import charges and 19% VAT.

Both Cypriot and non-Cypriot citizens can import their belongings tax-free once the ATT 2 form has been completed, signed, and approved by customs. The form can be completed as part of your online documentation or, if you're completing your paperwork offline, it will be provided before your shipment is collected in your country of origin.

Here are some examples of the documents you can provide as evidence to support your application:

Evidence of residence abroad

  • Disposal of property or end of lease documentation.
  • End of employment documentation.
  • Documentation relating to day-to-day living for a continuous 12-month period before arriving to live in Cyprus. These forms could be:
    • A letter from the applicant's employer on company-headed paper confirming their employment during this period.
    • At least four bank or credit card statements dated 1, 4, 7 and 12 months before the applicant's arrival in Cyprus and showing daily or weekly transactions (Please note that we DO NOT need to see monies, just the transactions in the applicant's name. Also, ensure your documents are not password protected).
  • Evidence of day-to-day living expenses, such as utility bills, car insurance etc.

Evidence of residence in Cyprus

  • Acquisition of property or copy of a lease or letting agreement (relevant pages only). If living in a family home, customs will require a letter or email from the parent or homeowner to confirm the applicant is presently residing at their address.
  • Letter from employer or a copy of a work contract. If unemployed, please confirm in writing or by email.
  • Evidence of day-to-day living expenses, such as utility bills for gas or electricity, home or car insurance etc.
  • Date of arrival or return to Cyprus.
  • Residence permit.
  • Registration of children for school.
  • ARC (Alien Registration Certificate) document for non-Cypriots.

Additional evidence

  • Proof that the applicant has owned the goods being shipped for more than six months, such as receipts or other documentation.

How the customs process works

Once all relevant documents have been sent over to us, our local agent Five Continents will carry out the following prior to your shipment arriving in Cyprus:

  • Review all completed documents and forms and discuss any concerns with you, if necessary.
  • Submit your documents to customs and respond to any additional questions they may have.
  • Arrange a date and time to meet with a customs clearance officer at your local customs office to clear your items for import into Cyprus. A Five Continents representative will also be present.
  • Get in touch with you once your goods have cleared customs to arrange delivery of your items.
  • If necessary, contact you for further documents or clarification.

All documents you submit to Five Continents must be addressed to, or otherwise clearly associated with, you as the declarant to help ensure a smooth customs clearance process. Wherever possible, you should provide original documents, together with any additional supporting evidence you may have.
