Thousands of Hongkongers are now eligible for a UK visa
The United Kingdom recently announced an expansion of its British National (Overseas) visa (BNO), providing additional legal routes for Hong Kong residents. By widening eligibility, the British government expects to support thousands more Hongkongers looking to move to the UK and build new lives over the coming years.
New eligibility criteria for adult children of BNOs
The updated BNO visa allows adult children of status holders to apply independently of their parents. To qualify, applicants must have been under 18 at the time of the UK's handover of Hong Kong to China on 1st July 1997. Before the update, most individuals were eligible only if they met specific dependency requirements, such as applying at the same time as the main applicant, living in the same household, or providing care for adult relatives.
The expansion also extends to immediate family members of eligible applicants, including partners and dependent children. The Home Office estimates that these changes could lead to around 26,000 additional arrivals over the next five years. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood declared: "This country will always honour its historic commitment to the people of Hong Kong. We are proud to have already provided a safe haven to almost 170,000 Hong Kongers since 2021."
Pathway to settlement and citizenship in the UK
While the eligibility criteria has widened, the core structure of the visa remains unchanged. Successful applicants can choose between a 2 ½-year or a 5-year grant of leave to live, work, and study in the UK. After five years of continuous residence, individuals may apply for indefinite leave to remain, then British citizenship twelve months later. The government continues to consult on specific settlement requirements, such as language proficiency and salary thresholds, to ensure the program's long-term success.
