What is Self-Assessed Clearance?

Self-Assessed Clearance (SAC) is a fast-track customs process used in Australia for non-commercial goods valued at less than AU$1,000 (approximately US$650/£488). It allows importers to clear shipments through Australian Customs quickly, without submitting a full import declaration or being present in the country when the goods arrive. SAC makes importing smaller consignments easier, faster, and cheaper.

The Australian Border Force assesses all goods that arrive in the country to ensure they meet import laws and biosecurity requirements. However, SAC streamlines the process for lower-value goods by reducing paperwork and enabling electronic submission through the Integrated Cargo System

While SAC helps bring in goods efficiently, the importer (typically represented by international shippers and customs brokers) must comply with Australian regulations. It’s their responsibility to ensure that all goods are accurately described, valued, and classified. Items, such as tobacco, alcohol, and drugs, do not qualify for customs-free clearance via SAC and instead require a full import declaration

Our SeaPost service from the UK to Australia

We recently launched our SAC SeaPost service for small shipments of personal goods from the UK to Australia. You can now send up to 4 Standard Seven Seas Worldwide boxes (0.25m³) or 2 medium-sized suitcases to Australia without needing to be present in the country. The total value of your shipment should not exceed AU$1,000 (approximately US$650/£488), and each item must weigh 30kg/66 lbs or less.

With SeaPost, you can send everything from excess holiday luggage and golf clubs to books and gifts for loved ones, completely free from tax and customs duties. However, your inventory packing list should clearly describe each item, including its quantity and approximate value, and avoid any prohibited goods such as alcohol, tobacco, hazardous materials, and perishable items.

If your shipment’s total value exceeds AU$1,000, you can send it using our Boxes and bags worldwide service by contacting our friendly customer service team. Please note that to qualify for duty-free imports, you must be present in Australia when your shipment arrives.

Important information about your SAC shipment

To avoid delays, inspection, or taxes, your SAC shipment must also not:

Your inventory should clearly show the sender’s and receiver’s contact details, a full description of each item, quantities, and values in Australian dollars. Do not undervalue goods in an attempt to stay below the AU$1,000 (around US$650/£488) threshold. If the ABF suspects false declarations, they may seize or delay shipments.

Using the information supplied in your inventory, your shipper or customs agent will electronically complete a Short Form SAC Declaration on your behalf. Inaccurate or incomplete information can lead to inspections or extra charges; therefore, accuracy is of the utmost importance.

If your shipment does not meet the above requirements, it will be treated as commercial goods and will be subject to customs taxes and duties.

For more information, please refer to the official Australian Border Force website.

How to accurately describe your shipment for tax-free self-assessed imports to Australia

Our SeaPost service to Australia lets you ship all kinds of personal goods and everyday belongings tax-free, provided you accurately describe them in your Inventory Packing List. For example, “university books”, “jumpers”, “hairdryer”, “towels”, etc.

However, if your inventory contains trigger words or phrases found in the SAC Declaration Thesaurus, including “personal effects”, “household goods”, “drug”, and “biological”, it’s likely customs will inspect your shipment, leading to delays and the loss of duty-free status.
