What kind of shipping boxes do we provide?

Our international luggage delivery service offers robust containers to protect your possessions during long journeys to Japan. Made from double-walled, chemically strengthened cardboard, our most popular boxes are Large and Standard. See below for dimensions. Overestimate how many boxes you need. We'll collect any that are unused and still in brand-new condition at no extra charge.

Specially shaped boxes made from the same materials are available for sending large items, such as instruments and sports equipment. Wrap them securely, and we'll box them at our closest depot.

You can use your own containers. But please avoid laundry bags, plastic crates, used food boxes and bin liners. Such containers break easily and will likely damage the rest of your shipment.

Is customs hassle-free when sending belongings to Japan?

Our international luggage delivery service makes the customs process in Japan easy. But there are some essential things to be aware of.

Like every country, Japan has a list of banned items to protect its people and the environment. Before you pack, please reference our Prohibited Goods page to avoid fines or delays.

Log in to your online account and complete the following documents:

  • An inventory listing all items you're sending to Japan. The Japanese imports office will see this, so accuracy is a must.
  • Optional insurance forms — peace of mind in the rare chance your delivery is lost or damaged.
  • Colour scans of the shipment owner's passport picture and signature pages.

Used personal effects are not subject to customs duties or tax in Japan, provided you don't intend to sell them. The same applies to portable professional equipment for use during your stay. For a full rundown, visit the official Japanese customs website.

Please note, you must be present in Japan before your shipment arrives. It is your responsibility to clear the shipment through customs using your appointed agent.

Our friendly customer service team is available 24/7 if you need more customs information or assistance at any stage.

How to pack your international luggage shipment in 4 steps

Securely wrapping and packing your belongings is essential when sending goods to Japan. Why not ease some stress by hiring a professional packing service? Otherwise, pack carefully and follow our expert tips below. For more in-depth packing guides, check out How to choose a box for shipping and Preparing large items for collection.

Seal your boxes:

Gather together your packing materials, including parcel tape and a knife. Fold in your box's small flaps then large flaps, and seal them shut with several layers of overlapping parcel tape.

Next, tightly wrap around the base of your box. Once your container is full of possessions, secure the lid similarly.

Be cautious with delicate things:

Use bubble wrap on all items and at least two layers for fragile goods. Place your heaviest items at the bottom layer of your box and lighter effects above and away from the sides.

Fill gaps with soft materials like packing paper or blankets. Give your container a gentle shake. If you hear anything move, add more soft materials.

Fill in your online inventory:

Log in to your account and complete your inventory — a list of every item you're sending to Japan. Customs officials will ask to see it, so accuracy is essential.

Using a marker pen, write the job number, box number, and shipment owner's destination country and city on two sides of every container. Check your inventory at the same time to ensure all details match.

Prepare for collection day:

To protect you and our driver, the max. weight limit for each container is 30kg/66lbs. Weigh everything on bathroom scales. If something is over the limit, remove some items and place them in a lighter container.

Finally, move your entire luggage delivery shipment as close to your building's exit as possible the evening before collection day.

This was our first time sending luggage overseas. Seven Seas Worldwide runs through everything extremely clearly and concisely so that no issues arise. It was an absolute dream using their shipping service, and it was very easy to track our shipment, too.
